Wedding Budget Breakdown: What Percentage to Spend on Each Category
Once you know your total wedding budget, the next question is how to split it. A percentage-based wedding budget keeps you from overspending on the first exciting thing (usually the dress or the venue) and running short on the boring essentials later. Here’s a sensible starting split you can adjust to your priorities.
A starting percentage breakdown
Percentages of your total budget:
- Venue & rentals — 20–30%
- Catering & bar — 25–30%
- Photography / videography — 10–15%
- Flowers & décor — 8–10%
- Music / entertainment — 8–10%
- Attire & beauty — 5–10%
- Planner / coordinator — 5–15% (if hired)
- Stationery (invites, signage, postage) — 2–3%
- Cake / dessert — 2–3%
- Rings — 2–3%
- Transportation & misc — 2–5%
- Buffer / contingency — 5–10% (do not skip this)
They won’t add to exactly 100% for everyone — that’s the point. Use them as a starting frame, then shift money toward what matters most to you.
Decide your top two, then trade off
You can have a stunning version of almost anything — just not everything. Pick the two categories you care about most (say photography and food), fund those generously, and let the rest flex down. A couple who loves great food and music can happily spend less on flowers; a couple who wants incredible photos can do a simpler venue.
Always build in a buffer
Weddings run over. Alterations cost more than quoted, the guest count creeps up, and gratuities and taxes stack on at the end. A 5–10% contingency line is the difference between “we adjusted” and “we went over.” Treat it as a real category, not leftover hope.
Track actual vs. budget as you go
Percentages only work if you check reality against them. Assign each category its dollar amount, then log every deposit and payment so you always see budget vs. actual and what’s remaining. Catch an overage in month three, not the week of.
